Domino theory question?

After his brother’s assassination Robert Kennedy wanted to distance himself from his brother’s policies in Southeast Asia and started taking on a very left-wing liberal (antiwar) slant to his stands. He was maneuvering to get the 68 Democratic presidential nod and sounding more antiwar as the Convention drew closer. Despite his brother’s general popularity it is unlikely he would have succeeded in getting elected with his antiwar rhetoric, any more than George McGovern did in 72. By the time Kennedy came out against the war the American people wanted to see the American troops hand over the fighting to the ARVN, but did not want to see the Communists win the war. They had figured out LBJ had botched the war and did not trust Humphrey to manage a pullout while leaving the South Vietnamese able to defend themselves. Nixon promised to end the war with honor, and he would probably have won in 68 no matter who the Democrats ran.
